Newberry College is set to open its 2012 football season on September 1, in the first of four games at home. The opener will be a matchup against Elizabeth City State University, a non-conference opponent. The teams have played only once, with Newberry coming out on top. Kickoff time will be 6:30pm at Newberry’s Setzler Field. A preseason poll by coaches in the South Atlantic Conference has ranked Newberry in a tie for third with Wingate University. Newberry will play Wingate on October 13 at Newberry’s homecoming. Seven Newberry players have been named to 2012 preseason All South Atlantic Conference teams. Newberry has 7 offensive and 8 defensive starters returning for the 2012 season.

On September 8 the Newberry Wolves will host Shorter University in another non-conference game. Shorter is transitioning from NAIA status to NCAA Division II. Newberry’s third game of the season is scheduled against SAC rival Catawba on September 15. Newberry’s September 22 opponent will be Carson-Newman, a team that Newberry beat easily in 2011. All of these home games are scheduled to begin at 6:30pm. The Wolves will play their first away game on September 29 against Mars Hill College, the 2011 SAC co-champion. Newberry will travel to Tigerville, South Carolina on October 6 to take on North Greenville University. This tough non-conference opponent had an impressive 11-3 record last season. Wingate University will be Newberry’s homecoming game opponent on October 13. Kickoff will be at 4pm. Other Newberry homecoming events will include a carnival, class reunions, a parade, and fireworks. The Wolves will play conference opponent Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee on October 20. Tusculum quarterback Bo Cordell has been named an All-SAC first team quarterback. UNC Pembroke will host Newberry on October 27. Newberry suffered a tough loss to this non-conference opponent in 2011. The last home game of the season is scheduled for November 3 against SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne, a team that topped the SAC coaches’ preseason poll. Game time will be at 2pm. The last regular season game will be played away against Brevard College, another conference opponent. Newberry College is a small, coeducational liberal arts institution located in Newberry, South Carolina. The Newberry Wolves play NCAA Division II sports. Todd Knight is beginning his 4th season as Newberry’s head football coach. His overall record in three seasons at the helm is 14-16. Single game tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Tickets to Newberry’s homecoming game are $20 for adults and $10 for children.
